Bread Facts

Some of the following bread “Tid-Bits” may seem a little far-fetched, but they are true to the best of my knowledge! So take a moment to read these interesting tidbits!

  • The average slice of bread contains only 1 gram of fat and 75-80 calories.

  • On average, Americans consume around 50 - 55 lbs of bread per year.

  • If you were to eat a sandwich for breakfast, lunch and supper, it would take approximately 68 days to consume the amount of bread produced from one bushel of wheat. The average family of four could live for 10 years off of the bread produced from 1 acre of wheat.

  • One bushel of wheat produces 73 1-pound loaves of bread.

  • The "breaking of bread" is the universal sign of peace.

  • Up to the 16th century breakfast consisted of bread, salted fish and ale.

  • Bread is an excellent source of protein, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals eg Thiamin B and Iron.

  • Bread is rich in carbohydrates and an ideal source of energy.

  • Bread is one of the best sources of calcium.

  • Bread is not fattening - it's what you put on it that piles on the calories!

  • While many cultures and religions and races have differences about which foods can be eaten, bread is the one food almost all consume.

  • Napoleon ordered "Pain pour Nicole" - his horse. The Germans thought the request sounded like "pumpernickel", hence the naming of the dark rye bread that so many enjoy.

  • A “bread and milk” poultice is said to draw poison from a lesion or boil.

  • Murphy’s law - “If you drop a slice of buttered bread, it will ALWAYS land butter-side down!”

  • Bread on average costs $2.00 a loaf. Good nutritional value for the dollar. The average farmer makes approximately 5 cents!

  • Bread and salt are symbols of welcome in Russia.
