Choosing a healthy diet that is low in calories or low in fat no longer means dull, tasteless eating. Nor does it mean complicated meal planning.

Given today's technology and competitive food market, the marketplace has resulted in top quality, healthy satisfying products.

I'm sure every food on the market, from milk products to everyone's favorite, chocolate, has a healthy and healthful tasty substitute, that is low in fat, has no fat, is sugar free and low-calorie. And, they're easy to find with the new food labeling requirements!

Modifying your daily diet can be simply done by using lower fat and lower caloried foods and beverages along with changing cooking methods.

For example: instead of using Whole Milk, which contains 150 calories per cup, use 2% low-fat which contains 120 calories per cup; 1% Low-fat: 105 calories per cup; 1/2% low-fat: 90 calories per cup; or fat-free/skimmed: 85 calories per cup.

As you can see, simply by substituting Whole Milk for 2% low-fat on your breakfast cereal, you've cut your calorie intake by 30 calories! It's that simple.

Drinking a diet soda in place of a sugared soda at lunch, or enjoying steamed or boiled vegetables instead of fried or creamed vegetables for dinner make all the difference in your daily calories and ultimately in the weight you gain or lose.

These simple substitutions help bring meals in line with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Healthful changes in your daily routine are certain to become weekly preferences, then monthly, and before long . . .

Listed in this section are menu suggestions that are easily adapted into your current diet and are sure to give you food for thought when planning your next meal. (Read Why 2,000 Calories? to determine your daily calorific intake.)

These delicious meal plans were created by dietitians who won the Calorie Control Council’s Healthy Menu Contest, and average 2,000 calories a day*. They are low in total fat and saturated fat. As you’ll soon see, 2,000 calories never tasted so good -- and are so good for you!

* Because caloric content can vary based on a variety of factors (e.g., product brand, cut of meat), the estimate of 2,000 calories a day will vary.
